Antarctic blast in Oceania! New Caledonia +8,1°C, Vanuatu +13,0°C, Tonga +13,3°C, Fiji +13,6°C, Niue +13,7°C, in New Zealand 24 inches of snow / 61 cm / 24 hours

Firstly extreme floods on Buller River and 24 inches of snow / 24 hours in the Alps in New Zealand, then very impressive Antarctic pressure high above parts of western Oceania, with very low temperatures in tropical islands!

The pressure low system in early August brought the largest flood flow at Bullet River in New Zealand since 1926, while in the mountains, heavy snowfall covered higher elevated centers.

After rain and snowstorm, frosts up to -6,5°C in lower situated regions appeared already 4. August 2021 – this value was measured in Mt Cook, 656 MASL, while Tara Hills (488 MASL) reported -3,9°C or even the metropolitan region of Dunedin (1 MASL) -3,8°C.

According to /https://twitter.com/extremetemps/, extremely cold Antarctic air contributed to anomalously cold mornings within strong pressure high in New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Tonga, Fiji, and Niue, western Oceania, too.

In New Caledonia, only +8,1°C was measured, while Vanuatu, relatively close to Papua-New Guinea, reported only +13,0°C, Tonga +13,3°C, Fiji +13,6°C, and Niue +13,7°C.

E.g., a record low for Suva, Fiji´s capital is only +13,0°C, a record low for Prot Vila, Vanuatu´s capital +8,1°C, or in Nuku´alofa, Tonga´s capital, only +10,0°C.

Not only South America, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, but parts of Oceania are from time to time bothered by powerful cooldowns of Antarctic origin, too.

First cool spell in Oceania tropical islands.Temperatures dropped to the following Tmins in the past days (but still quite far from all time records):
Tonga:13.3C at Fua Amotu
Vanuatu:13.0C at Bauerfield
Fiji:13.6C at Sigatoka
Niue:13.7C at Niue AP
New Caledonia:8.1C at Ile Mare pic.twitter.com/Lys2Qy5VKo

Weather Update

The high pressure with a deep subtropical low pressure system generating & directing heavy swells over Fiji waters has drifted eastwards.
Consequently, the heavy swell warning & the strong wind warning previously in force for parts of Fiji has been cancelled. pic.twitter.com/uyvjonwIg8

A high pressure system to the south of Fiji is directing strong, cool winds up our way, hence the chilly conditions right now & heavy swells. Kadavu, Southern Lomaiviti and Southern Lau can expect winds gusting up to 60km/hr. Winds should start to ease from tomorrow. pic.twitter.com/FcsV5tQg0u

Cold nights will linger around this week especially about the interior parts of larger islands. Temps in Viti Levu are expected to plummet as low as 12°C in inland areas like Monasavu and 16°C-19°C in some coastal areas on Viti Levu & Vanua Levu.
