Bulgaria’s Support for Ukraine’s Energy Sector: A G-7+ Meeting Recap
During his recent trip to New York, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria, Ivan Kondov, attended a G-7+ meeting with foreign ministers to address the urgent need for support in Ukraine’s energy sector. The meeting was co-hosted by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani, as part of Italy’s 2024 rotating G7 presidency.
The discussions at the meeting revolved around the escalating Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in preparation for winter. The focus was on identifying and addressing Ukraine’s immediate requirements while also coordinating efforts among the G-7+ countries over the next six months. Kondov emphasized how Russia’s ongoing military aggression has led to severe devastation and humanitarian crises in Ukraine, posing a threat not only to its security but also to that of the Black Sea region, Europe, and globally.
Kondov reiterated Bulgaria’s unwavering support for Ukraine across various fronts—political, financial, military, humanitarian, and diplomatic—dating back to the conflict’s onset. He stressed Bulgaria’s dedication to assisting Ukraine for as long as needed, particularly with emphasis in supporting its energy sector. Notably mentioned was a Memorandum signed during President Zelensky’s visit to Bulgaria—a significant step forward in joint efforts related to natural gas and nuclear energy collaboration between both nations.
