Sports News of Sunday, 11 August 2024

Cote d’Ivoire and Cape Verde emerged as the only West African nations â£to secure a medal in the 2024 Olympic Games, while powerhouse countries â€like Ghana and Nigeria failed ‌to make an impact.

Cheick Sallah⢠Cisse from Cote d’Ivoire claimed bronze in Taekwondo, showcasing his prowess by⣠defeating Mexico’s Carlos Sansores with a score of 2-1. He also conquered opponents from USA and†Great Britain on his way to victory.†This was not Cisse’s first taste of Olympic â€success, as he had previously won gold at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

On the other hand, David Pina from Cape Verde secured bronze in Men’s Flyweight but fell short against Uzbekistan’s Hasanboy Dusmatov. Nonetheless, he made history as the first athlete from Cape Verde to win an Olympic medal.

In contrast, other West African countries â€such as Nigeria, Ghana, Guinea, â¤Togo and others ended their campaign without any medals despite‌ their participation. Nigeria â¤had a significant presence at the⤠Games with 88 athletes competing⤠across various events.

When looking at all African ‌countries combined on â£the medal table, Kenya dominated with 11 medals†– including four golds. Following closely behind were Algeria, South Africa and ‌Ethiopia.

This†illustrates a â¤strong â£showing by some African nations but disappointment for⣠others who were unable to⢠make their â£mark on the international ‌stage through â¤these global games.
