The Independent State of Samoa is a Polynesian island country in Oceania. Originally called Western Samoa, the country is located 889km northeast of Tonga, 1,152km northeast of Fiji, 610km northwest of Niue, 483km east of Wallis and Futuna, 64km west of American Samoa, 1,151km southeast of Tuvalu, 4,190km southwest of Hawaii and 519km south of Tokelau.
On January 1, 1962, Western Samoa gained its independence from New Zealand. Western Samoa was admitted to the United Nations on December 15, 1976 and changed its name to Samoa on July 4, 1997.
Fiamē Naomi Mataʻafa, 64, is the incumbent and seventh prime minister of Samoa. She assumed office on May 24, 2021.
