Pasifika Festival in Katikati Celebrates 10th Anniversary
The eagerly awaited Pasifika Festival in the Bay is set to bring the vibrant cultures of the Pacific Islands to life as it returns on Saturday, 2 November 2024. This event, celebrating its 10th anniversary, will feature performances from 35 school groups representing various Pacific nations such as Tokelau, Niue, Cook Islands, Tonga, Samoa, Kiribati, and Fiji. Over 8,000 attendees are expected to enjoy traditional cuisine and music at Katikati College.
Originating from a group of teachers in Tauranga Moana who sought to address Pasifika achievement within schools back in 2015 by providing students with a platform for cultural expression. Melanie Cottingham one of the original organizers expressed her joy at watching students grow in confidence and pride after performing consistently since the festival’s inception.
Research has shown that when Pacific students’ identities and cultures are recognized and valued within educational settings they perform better academically. The festival has provided an inclusive space for younger generations to learn about their heritage through dance performances like hula from Hawaii or faatele from Tuvalu.
Additionally, there is an opportunity for young individuals interested in arts and event management fields to participate through Tuakana Teina program which offers mentoring opportunities during the festival. Other workshops will also be available featuring hands-on experiences related to Pasifika crafts including hiapo/masi/tapa (cloth), drumming techniques from Cook Islands along with foufou (head lei) making demonstrations.
This year’s event has received support from Tauranga Western Bay Community Event Fund (TWBCEF) with a $23,000 grant. According to Jodie Rickard of Western Bay of Plenty District Council this not only provides recognition but also encourages understanding among local communities regarding different cultures living together.
