New Zealand recruits James Cameron for new tourism video

New Zealand has recruited the acclaimed science fiction director James Cameron to extol the beauties of South Island.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker, responsible for blockbusters including Titantic, The Terminator and Avatar, has a second home which he bought four years ago on the coast north of Wellington, the capital, and says it is “my kind of country”.

In the video Cameron and his wife, Suzy Amis, are seen exploring highlights of the country’s South Island, including Tasman Glacier, Dart River canyon and Blanket Bay.

“There is so much to see and experience and you can do it all because everything is so close together,” he said.

“If you happen to like helicopters like I do, you could see 10 of the most stunning places you’ll see in your lifetime in a day. If you are driving, an hour and a half or two hours, the country just unrolls toward you like an IMAX film.”

“When you see something you have never seen before, it’s a wonderful experience. It’s like a living painting; it’s never the same view two days in a row.”

Daniel Borgman, director of the video and an Auckland resident, said it was poignant to see the South Island through the eyes of Cameron.

As one of the most respected filmmakers of our time, to have him in front of the camera has allowed us to create a really special and atmospheric piece of content we are all extremely proud to share,” he said.

In 2012, New Zealand’s flag carrier Air New Zealand released an advert that went viral featuring Peter Jackson, director of the Lord of the Rings film series, which was filmed in the country, and a number of hobbits and elves managing hospitality on a flight.
