After many years of a strict use of social media platforms, the Spanish Royal Household has finally announced that they have also landed on Instagram.
With the account handle @casareal.es, the opening of the new profile coincided with the celebrations for King Felipe’s 10th anniversary of his proclamation.
The first three posts were all related to the celebrations: the first is a gallery of images from the morning events, the second is a reel showing the evening portion of the festivities, and the third is a group of photos from the opening of the exhibition.
They have also already posted several Instagram Stories from the events of the 20th, and it appears that they have set up a way for Instagram to preserve them, with highlights already being created and on display, divided by category and by member of the Family.
They are one of the last Royal Households to land on the Meta social media platform, together with the Japanese Imperial Household Agency, which opened its profile at the beginning of 2024.
However, Spain has long been a systematic user of X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube, with updates being provided on all events on the Royal Agenda, as well as occasional posts on X for special events, particularly sports victories and natural disasters.
Contrary to the Japanese Imperial Family’s account, they have immediately followed other Royal Household accounts, including the British, Swedish, Japanese, Danish, Luxembourgish, Norwegian, Belgian and Dutch accounts, as well as institutional entities of Spain and Europe. Interestingly, the follows have been reciprocated only by the Swedes, the Dutch and the Luxembourgish Courts for now.
This new platform will allow the Spanish Royals to better connect with its citizens, especially the younger ones, and fits quite well into the changes that King Felipe has made to the institution throughout his first decade on the throne – changes that have all converged on one goal: more transparency and a lot of hard work at the service of the Spanish people.
