Normally consumers don’t know that their purchases may come with deforestation, climate pollution, or land-grabbing. In Spain, we investigate the origin of basic commodities used in the production of our food.
Mighty Earth is working to transform the meat and soy industry by persuading supermarkets, financial institutions and governments to end deforestation and abuse of Indigenous communities.
Meat fed with deforestation
Spain is a leading meat manufacturer in the EU. In parallel, the total production of animal feeding in Spain reached, during 2021, 38,553,750 tons (t), which places the country as the leading meat manufacturer in the EU, being among the top ten countries manufacturers of the world.
What about methane?
Methane is a greenhouse gas 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide (CO2) over a twenty-year cycle, and already accounts for almost one fifth of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Animal agriculture is the largest single contributor to methane pollution. Spain’s National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan 2023-2030 lacks targets for reducing methane gas emissions, especially in the agricultural sector which is responsible for 62.7% of these methane emissions.
