Hotel Cesare Review, San Marino

The hotel’s excellent restaurant is also open to external clients for lunch and dinner and serves a seasonal menu incorporating plenty of fresh fish and local meats for dishes such as pigeon with mushrooms or prawn-filled pasta with truffle; vegetarian options include spelt tagliatelle with vegetables. There are monthly specials and a range of meats and fish are grilled to order at the open fire, while the choice of desserts includes cheesecake and a range of refreshing sorbets such as green apple or mandarin.

The various delicious breads are all home-made, as are the pastas and desserts, and there’s an extensive wine list with a good range of San Marino labels as well as choice vintages from Italy and France. Service is elegant and professional without being stiff or overly formal. At lunchtimes there are extra daily specials and lighter options such as salads and filled piadinas (the local flat-bread).

Breakfast is downstairs in a dedicated room, with patio tables outside in summer, and there’s a decent buffet including a range of homemade cakes, biscuits and breads together with cold cuts and cheeses, boil-you-own or scrambled eggs (omelettes can be requested), a variety of cereals, croissants, organic jams and honey, fresh fruit and a selection of seeds. Hot drinks are made fresh and soya milk and a good range of gluten-free items are available.
