Which Europeans drink the most alcohol?

According to Notícias ao Minuto, a study published by the scientific journal ‘Addiction’ identified six patterns of alcohol consumption in Europe.

The conclusion of the investigation comes after analysing consumption data collected between 2000 and 2019 and suggests that the consumption of this substance occurs in stable and specific groups of drinks that appear to be partially determined by geography.

The different consumption patterns are “deeply rooted in culture” and are therefore “difficult to change”, argues Jürgen Rehm, co-author of the study. According to the author, it was concluded that consumption patterns are related to mortality rates from diseases recorded in these countries.

Here are the consumption patterns recorded in 2019:

Wine-loving countries: This category is characterised by greater consumption of wine and a lower intake of beverages such as liqueurs and beer. These are the countries where there is the lowest alcohol consumption. They are France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Sweden.

Countries that drink a lot of beer (and few spirits): Here we find Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia and Spain. People of these nationalities tend to drink more when moving to a foreign country.

Countries that drink a lot of beer (and at specific times): They are characterised by being countries where a lot of beer is consumed and where there is a high prevalence of alcohol consumption in specific episodes, that is, when they drink, they drink a lot. Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia are countries that fit into this category.

Countries that drink a lot of alcohol: These are countries that are characterised by a high consumption of spiritual drinks and a high consumption of beer. These are countries that generally record a higher consumption of alcohol. We talk about Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

Countries that have a high rate of alcohol consumption and also a high rate of people who do not drink: These are the cases of Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Cyprus.

Countries with high prevalence and excessive alcohol consumption: Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, and Malta.
