In 2024, the Post Office released its annual Holiday Money Report, naming Hội An in Vietnam the destination of choice for budget travellers. The matrix used for this report, the Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer, combines the cost of eight popular tourist items. These include a three-course meal for two with wine, a cup of coffee, a bottle of local beer, a can of cola, a glass of wine, a bottle of still water, suncream and insect repellent. In Hội An, for example, a bottle of beer costs around £1.16, and the total cost of these eight items is just £51.18.
Cape Town in South Africa takes second place, with a combined price of £54.35 for the eight surveyed items. At number three is Mosamba in Kenya, where a cup of coffee costs just £1.34. But some of the destinations touted as being ideal for budget-friendly travellers in this report might surprise you – Tokyo in Japan, for example, sits at number four.
According to the Post Office Holiday Money Report, the Algarve in Portugal is the most affordable destination in Europe. Portugal’s sunshine region is a place of rugged beaches, wild countryside, and exceptional seafood and is ranked fifth among wallet-friendly destinations.
