World Bicycle Day in the Council of Europe - Poland in the Council of Europe

On June 3, at the initiative of the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Poland to the Council of Europe, World Bicycle Day was celebrated for the first time in the Council of Europe.

On this occasion, a group of representatives of diplomatic missions accredited to the Council of Europe and employees of the organization drove around the buildings of the institutions of the Council of Europe (Palace of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights) and the European Union (European Parliament). The aim of the event was to emphasize the Polish contribution to the promotion of environmentally friendly urban transport, such as bicycles.

The event was attended by the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Bjørn Berge, and representatives of the secretariat of the Council of Europe.

World Bicycle Day was established by a resolution of the UN General Assembly in 2018. The initiative was initiated by prof. Leszek Sybilski, former Polish professional cyclist. In 2023, UNESCO adopted a decision on the initiative “BIKE FOR ALL” – BICYCLES FOR A SUSTAINABLE AND HEALTHY LIFESTYLE, emphasizing that this means of transport is climate-friendly, easy to use, and, above all, a driving force for intergenerational integration.
