The Netherlands Partners with Naval Group for New Submarines
The Netherlands has awarded a contract to French defense company Naval Group to begin the construction of four state-of-the-art Orka-class submarines, which will replace the country’s aging Walrus-class submarines.
Dutch Command Materiel and IT Commander Jan Willem Hartman explained that the selection of the Orka class was the result of a comprehensive procurement process and was deemed to be the most suitable replacement.
Drawing inspiration from Naval Group’s Barracuda design, these new submarines will be named HNLMS Orka (Orca), HNLMS Zwaardvis (Swordfish), HNLMS Barracuda, and HNLMS Tijgerhaai (Tiger Shark).
