Malta – Flash Floods After 100mm of Rain in 24 Hours – FloodList

Severe weather, including strong winds, heavy rain and high waves, caused damage in Malta on 10 February, 2018.

Police reported that 1 man was killed and a passenger injured when a car was hit by a fallen tree. A large ship ran aground in Qawra during the storm.

Malta Weather reported an average of 65mm of rain in 36 hours to 10 February, which is more than the monthly average rainfall for February. Over 100 mm of rain fell in some areas in the space of 24 hours.

Roads were flooded and vehicles left stranded. The worst of the flooding was reported in Marsa, Gżira, Sliema and Balzan. Local media reported that flooding affected the St Vincent De Paul Residence, a hospital and nursing home in Marsa.

St John’s Rescue Corp were called upon to help pump flooded buildings and rescue stranded drivers.
