Many dead fish found in a stream in south of Luxembourg

The dead fish were found in the Dipbech stream

A large number of dead fish were found in the Dipbech stream in the southern town of Esch-sur-Alzette on Monday morning after rising temperatures prevented the aquatic creatures from accessing oxygen, the Water Management Administration (AGE) said.

Pollution is not currently being considered as a cause, after water samples were taken for checks and the dead fish removed, the authorities said.

“Due to the high temperatures and low water level, the oxygen level in the stream had dropped sharply, probably causing the death of the fish,” the AGE said in its press release.

Heat will persist across northern and western Europe in the coming weeks, with extreme temperatures on the Iberian peninsula by the end of July, according to weather forecasts.

Along with the rest of Europe, Luxembourg is experiencing high temperatures. Groundwater reserves were 30% lower in the winter of 2022 compared to a year earlier, the AGE said, with the flow of certain water sources among the lowest ever measured in twenty years.

Climate change will worsen the phenomenon in the future, the water management administration said.
