Luxembourg – Dozens Evacuated After Record Rainfall Causes Rivers to Break Banks – FloodList

Dozens of people were evacuated and emergency services responded to more than 1,000 calls for help after flooding in Luxembourg following heavy rain on 14 July 2021. The government said material damage is significant.

As of 17 July, no fatalities were reported in Luxembourg. However, neighbouring Germany and Belgium have suffered catastrophic flooding. More than 100 flood-related fatalities were reported in western Germany. As of 17 July the death toll in the Belgium floods jumped to over 20. Meanwhile thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes due to overflowing rivers in Limburg province in the Netherlands.

In Luxembourg the Fire and Rescue Service CGDIS said Born, Steinheim, Rosport and Echternach were the worst affected. After initially warning residents in affected areas to stay in their homes, over 150 people were evacuated in Echternach, which is situated on the Sauer / Sûre river on the border with Germany. Evacuations were also reported in Rosport and a small number of people were also evacuated in Vianden.

CGDIS and Police teams carried out more than 1,200 weather-related interventions across the country on 15 July. No injuries or fatalities were reported. However the government’s crisis information service said material damage is significant.

MeteoLux reported torrential rains broke two records for the month of July at the weather station at Luxembourg-Findel Airport. The maximum precipitation in 12 hours and 24 hours reached accumulations of 74.2 mm and 79.4 mm, beating the previous records set on 22 July 2016 of 60.4 mm / 70.6 mm.
