Elections 2024: Good early indications for Clare’s prospects in Europe

Elections 2024: Good early indications for Clare's prospects in Europe

After a heady weekend of highs — for local election candidates — and lows — for Clare’s senior hurling panel — the eyes of Clare turn now to Cork, where the county looks to secure it’s first MEP in almost 30 years.

A first count is expected around midday this Monday morning, June 10, at the Ireland South count centre at Nemo Rangers.

Sitting MEPs Sean Kelly and Billy Kelleher are on track to retain their seats, but Clare Independent TD Michael McNamara looked to be in third place after counting finished on Sunday night.

Early tallies from his home county showed he took the majority vote here, leaving his fellow Clare candidates, Eddie Punch (Independent Ireland) and Michael Leahy (Irish Freedom Party) far behind.

Sinn Féin’s Kathleen Funchion looks a strong contender for the fourth seat, but Cynthia Ní Mhurchú of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael’s John Mullins, sitting MEPs Grace O’Sullivan and Mick Wallace, and Sinn Féin senator Paul Gavan all look in with a chance for those last two seats.
