The truth behind our fascination with Iceland

The truth behind our fascination with Iceland

In terms of historical attractions, few places stir the soul like Thingvellir, a steep-sided, moss-covered gorge wedged between two tectonic plates. Used as a parliament from the 10th century, it’s a popular fixture on south Iceland’s well-trodden Golden Circle circuit. Favouring fewer crowds, I prefer Borgarvirki in the north, a volcanic plug used as a fortress, with views so sweeping and far-reaching there could be no better place from which to command the world.

In a fog of spewing volcanic vents and thundering waterfalls, fantasy and reality become an intriguing blur. Icelanders revel in stories of trolls, elves and huldufólk – hidden people, who exist in a parallel universe and lurk behind rocks and in shadows.
