Hungary's 'Make Europe Great Again' Motto For EU…

Hungary’s government has revealed that its upcoming presidency of the European Union will be held under the motto ‘Make Europe Great Again.’ The EU Affairs Minister outlined Budapest’s program and ambitions for its six-month term starting on July 1, emphasizing the idea of collective strength while maintaining individual identities.

The government clarified that the motto is focused on Europe and not a direct reference to Donald Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ movement. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, known for his nationalist stance and alignment with Trump, has expressed hopes for Trump’s return to the U.S. presidency to aid in resolving conflicts in Eastern Europe.

Despite Hungary’s divergence from EU and NATO norms, Orbán aims to use the presidency to push for economic competitiveness, defense industry growth, enhanced border controls, and a farmer-oriented agricultural policy. The presidency, while holding limited power, allows countries to prioritize national interests on the EU agenda.

Orbán’s government has faced criticism from the European Commission over democratic concerns, leading to frozen funds. Hungary’s stance on issues like Russian sanctions and NATO support for Ukraine has further isolated it within the EU.

As Hungary prepares to take on the EU presidency, it seeks to address various policy areas and contribute to the overall progress of the bloc. The government’s motto reflects its vision for a stronger and more cohesive Europe, emphasizing both continuity and change in key areas of focus.
