Greece joins Tenerife in demanding ‘ban’ on Brit holidaymakers as ‘Burn Airbnb’ graffitied on buildings

Bristol Live

It’s not looking good for wannabe Brit tourists to many holiday destinations in Europe. Greece has joined the likes of Tenerife, Lanzarote, Majorca and Menorca in protesting against tourism and holidays.

It’s been reported by France24 that the success of the tourist industry is making it difficult for local Greeks to keep up with surging property prices. It is said that residents cannot keep up with property prices, which sees more than 40 per cent of their disposable income being spent on housing – more than in any other European country.

And now, Athens in Greece has called for an end to ‘over-tourism’ through massive graffiti messages, reports Birmingham Live.

The messages have been sprayed onto the sides of buildings and other walls across the city, with one reading: “Tourists Go Home! Greek State Kills”. Slogans including ‘No Tourists No Hipsters’ and ‘Burn Airbnb’ have also been spotted in the streets of Athens.

In April, Greece launched ‘free’ week-long holidays for around 25,000, mainly British, tourists who fled the 2023 Rhodes wildfires, as part of the ‘Rhodes Week’ initiative. In reply to the story, one person said: “Spain will suffer heavy losses without tourism. Greece could not survive. Be careful what you wish for.”

Should Brits be encouraged to holiday more in the UK or should we still be able to go abroad easily? Let us know in the comments below.
