Europe: Finland's Fortum Narrows Potential New Nuclear Options

Finnish utility Fortum has narrowed its shortlist of potential new nuclear technologies to six — three large and three small — as it continues its feasibility study on deploying new nuclear in Finland and Sweden, a senior Fortum executive told the Nordic Nuclear Forum this week. Fortum and Swedish state-owned utility Vattenfall, which completed its own feasibility study earlier this year, are the only utilities publicly mulling new nuclear construction in Europe’s Nordic region. How these firms proceed will likely dictate what nuclear technologies are built in the region, if any, and both utilities have said they will require state support for any newbuilds and are waiting for further government signals.
