He was also absent during Belgium’s gold-winning run at the Tokyo Olympics. In a 2019 post on Instagram, he was seen diligently training on a treadmill in preparation for challenging conditions expected in Japan. Despite being a consistent player with his national club side, his exclusion from the final Olympic roster was heartbreaking.
The disappointment continued when he faced another formidable hurdle during the 2023 World Cup when Belgium succumbed to defeat against Germany in a penalty shootout—the turning point being Cosyns’ own missed shot. Once again overlooked for selection for Paris 2024, he found his aspirations of representing his country at an Olympic event dashed.

“The decision not to be included in Paris prompted me toward retirement,” reflects Cosyns—who concluded his international career with an impressive tally of 180 caps and 80 goals over ten years. “It became increasingly difficult to commit myself fully again; I wanted my love for hockey intact for many more years,” he explained candidly in an interview with Sportstar.
Now aged 33, Cosyns is redirecting his focus towards rekindling enthusiasm within his professional hockey journey while playing as a defender instead of as striker with Racing Club within Belgium’s Hockey League. Alongside exploring coaching opportunities, he is eager to participate further internationally—for instance through competing in India’s Hockey League (HIL).

On January 21st, during Tuesday’s game against rivals UP Rudras that positioned them atop their league standings due to strategic plays including one exceptional drag-flick from him—a testament that “el Coze” remains impactful on-field despite transitioning roles.
