The Minister of Finance, Ervin Mete, received yesterday in a meeting the president of Mastercard for Europe, Mark Barnett. Minister Mete and Barnett talked about the developments in terms of digitization and electronic payments in our country, where a positive trend in this aspect has been observed in recent years. Minister Mete and the president of Mastercard Europe also discussed the possibilities of increasing Mastercard’s presence in Albania. Based on the data analyzed by Mastercard regarding the flights scheduled for the period June-August 2024, Tirana is the third most preferred destination in the world, after Munich and Tokyo. In this regard, the president of Mastercard Europe expressed the company’s interest in cooperating with the Albanian government, evaluating Albania as a market with high potential in the region in terms of digitalization and in particular the growth of electronic payments. Barnett expressed his willingness to support the government’s efforts to increase digitalization, reduce cash payments and reduce informality. Minister Mete emphasized that Albania has advanced in terms of fulfilling the criteria for membership in the Single Euro Payments Market (SEPA), as an integral part of the Growth Plan for the countries of the Western Balkans, drawn up by the European Commission, which is already preliminary application has been made.
