The decisive reelection of Donald Trump sets the stage for a renewed focus on the “America First” doctrine, with significant implications for the global order, particularly in Asia.

As the new administration prepares to take office in January, questions emerge regarding the United States’ shifting role in the region, its strategy toward China, and its approach to key subregions like South Asia and Southeast Asia.

The Asia Society Policy Institute and The Express Tribune will host a webinar to examine the potential impact of Trump’s second term on Asia.

The virtual discussion, moderated by Farwa Aamer, Director of South Asia Initiatives at ASPI, will include Daniel Russel, Vice President of International Security and Diplomacy at ASPI, Maleeha Lodhi, former Ambassador of Pakistan to the United States and former Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, and Kamran Yousaf, journalist and host of The Review on Express News.

Expert panelists will discuss how intensifying US-China competition might affect relations with American allies and partners in the region, what the new administration’s policies suggest about future US priorities in Asia, and the strategic options for South Asia—especially Pakistan—as it seeks to strengthen ties and navigate evolving geopolitical dynamics.

Speakers

Daniel Russel is the Vice President for International Security and Diplomacy at the Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI). Before his current role, he served as Diplomat in Residence and Senior Fellow at ASPI for a year.

Russel is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service at the US Department of State, where he most recently held the position of Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. Prior to this, Russel served at the White House as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Asian Affairs on the National Security Council (NSC).

Dr. Maleeha Lodhi is a distinguished Pakistani diplomat, academic, and political commentator. She has served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States (1994–1997, 1999–2002), High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (2003–2008), and Permanent Representative to the UN (2015–2019).

Recognised as one of the most accomplished women in Pakistan’s diplomatic history, Dr. Lodhi has made notable contributions to both diplomacy and academia.

Kamran Yousaf, with over 20 years in journalism, focuses on defense and foreign affairs for The Express Tribune and co-hosts The Review on Express News.

Farwa Aamer directs South Asia Initiatives at ASPI, leading projects on regional cooperation and climate impact. She holds a BSc from UCL and a Masters in Management from BPP Business School.
