Chris Fetter: Celebrated as MLB Coach of the Year
Recognition of Excellence in Pitching Development
In a remarkable achievement, Chris Fetter, the pitching coach for the Detroit Tigers, has been honored as Baseball America’s MLB Coach of the Year. At just 38 years old, Fetter joined manager A.J. Hinch’s team during its inaugural season in 2021, bringing with him an impressive track record from his time as pitching coach at the University of Michigan. His innovative approach to pitcher development and adept use of technology to enhance athletic performance have established him as one of baseball’s most sought-after coaching talents.
Outstanding Performance Statistics
During Fetter’s tenure with the Tigers, pitchers enjoyed tremendous success on the mound in 2024. The team’s collective earned run average (ERA) was an impressive 3.61, ranking them third in Major League Baseball—a testament to Fetter’s effective coaching strategies and player development techniques. Notably, Tarik Skubal emerged as a standout performer this season and was awarded the prestigious Cy Young Award under Fetter’s mentorship.
From Player to Coach: A Journey
A native of Indiana, Fetter showcased his skills on the field while playing for the Wolverines at Michigan. He graduated in 2009 before being selected by the San Diego Padres during that year’s MLB draft—an opportunity he earned after an outstanding collegiate career when he was picked in round nine. Following four years within their minor league ranks without advancing beyond advanced Class A play, he shifted gears towards a coaching path.
His professional journey included a stint as a coach for Double-A San Antonio back in 2013 and three seasons working as a scout for the Los Angeles Angels organization. Subsequently, he took on roles including serving one year as Ball State University’s pitching coach before assuming responsibilities with the Los Angeles Dodgers where he held position as their minor-league pitching coordinator.
Return to Roots and National Success
On July 24th, 2017, Chris returned to his roots when he rejoined Michigan’s baseball program under head coach Erik Bakich’s leadership—where his expertise significantly contributed to guiding their team all they way to reach finals at the College World Series championship event in 2019.
