Historic Start to South America’s Ski Season with Another Major Storm Cycle Incoming

South America is in for a historic season kickoff with yet another storm cycle rolling through, lasting into next weekend (Sunday evening). Most of the snowfall will target the central and southern mountains, primarily south of Corralco. This is a shift from the last few systems, which heavily favored the northern regions.

Portillo is already having a banner year, surpassing their annual average snowfall with an impressive 569cm (224 inches) to date, which is two feet more than their average annual snowfall of 200 inches. And this is happening before their snowiest month, August! Imagine if Mt. Baker hit its annual average of 640 inches by January 1st – that’s what we’re talking about here. Holy smokes, what a season!

Check out the storm cycle in the GIF below from the European model. It’s essentially nonstop moisture until Sunday evening:

Projected Storm Totals by Friday Morning:

– Pucon: 50-100cm

– Chapelco: 55-85cm

– Cerro Bayo: 50-85cm

– Cerro Catedral: 50-85cm

– Corralco: 50-70cm

– Antillanca: 40-70cm

Resorts in the north might see an inch or two later in the week, but it’s looking unlikely. Keep an eye out for a bit of snow at northern resorts next weekend, but don’t expect much.

Looking ahead, high pressure will settle over the Andes late next weekend and into the following week, but it will be short-lived. Near to above-average storminess is expected to creep back in by mid-week, especially in the north. While this doesn’t guarantee snow, it certainly increases the likelihood. Stay tuned!
