Moroccan giants Raja Casablanca responded to Mandla Mandela’s CHAN opening ceremony speech during their Botola Pro 1 league encounter yesterday.
Mandela made a controversial statement about Morocco’s occupation of the Western Sahara, prompting Raja CA fans to hold up a sign that refers to Orania as the “Only colony left in Africa”.

Raja Casablanca Vs Mandla Mandela
During the opening ceremony of the TotalEnergies CHAN Algeria 2022 tournament at the newly-named Nelson Mandela Stadium, Mandla Mandela triggered anger in Morocco.
“In his [Nelson Mandela’s] honour, let us not forget the last colony of Africa, Western Sahara. Let us fight to free Western Sahara from oppression,” he said during the CHAN opener, where Algeria edged out Libya 1-0.

Mandela received a rapturous response from the Algerian fans, where he also advocated for the liberation of Palestine:

Back in Casablanca, Raja CA fans clearly didn’t enjoy Mandela’s provocative comments and put up a sign that read:
“Little Mandela, the only colony left in Africa is Orania.”

Raja Casablanca came away with a 2-1 victory over MC Oujda on the night that was spotlighted by the fans response to Mandela. The incident also sparked plenty of response on social media, seeing both Orania and Mandela become trending topics on Twitter.
As per AFP, Mandela’s speech CAF says it will investigate and look into the political statements and events at the opening ceremony at the CHAN tournament.
