NAIROBI, Kenya
A blast at an explosives depot in Seychelles has caused extensive damage, forcing President Wavel Ramkalawan to declare a state of emergency in the island nation.
“Following an explosion at the CCCL (Construction Chemicals and Commodities Limited) explosives store that has caused massive damage to the Providence area and the surrounding areas and major destruction caused by flooding due to heavy rains, the President has declared a State of Emergency for today,” a statement from the presidency said.
The incident occurred in the Providence industrial area in Mahe, the largest island in the Indian Ocean archipelago.
The presidency said that massive damage to the Providence industrial area and its surrounding regions has prompted the closure of all schools.
“Everyone is being asked to stay at home. All schools will be closed. Only workers in the essential services and persons traveling will be allowed free movement,” it added.
Emergency services have been mobilized to address immediate concerns and ensure the safety of the affected population.
