Regional Bureau for West and Central Africa: Niger – Education Dashboard: 2022-2023 School Year (September 2023) – Niger

Regional Bureau for West and Central Africa: Niger - Education Dashboard: 2022-2023 School Year (September 2023) - Niger

Despite the deterioration of the security situation in Niger during the 2022-2023 school year, the activities carried out by UNHCR and its partners to promote the enrolment of refugees in education resulted in an increase in enrolment rates of 3 points at primary level and 8 points at secondary level compared to the previous year. The percentage of out-of-school children also decreased by 9 points.

The development of education activities in new localities such as Madaoua, Chadakori and Madarounfa (awareness campaigns, reinforcement of school infrastructure, provision of hygiene kits, etc.) and the increase in targeted support to secondary school students have contributed to this positive trend. Particular attention has also been paid to the pre-primarylevel in order to improve access and enrolment for refugee children.

Thanks to the support of Education Cannot Wait, 1,236 refugee and host community children enrolled in remedial classes were reintegrated into the formal system during the 2022-2023 school year.

At the tertiary level, although the enrolment rate is still very low, it should be noted that 80 refugee students have benefited from a university scholarship in Niger, thanks to funding from several programmes and partners (DAFI, local UNHCR scholarship, Mastercard, Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie-IFIC). 14 students have also benefited from university scholarships to study abroad, thanks to the university corridors set up in Italy (UNICORE programme), France (UNIV’R programme) and Germany (DAAD Leadership for Africa programme). In addition, the partnership between UNHCR and the Bioforce humanitarian training institute, with the support of the Government of Monaco, has enabled 57 refugees to benefit from certified vocational training (in Niger and Senegal).
