Mindfulness, meditation and mishaps: How I found balance at a Mauritius wellness festival

The busy three-day schedule incorporated a range of workshops and classes: from dancing, yoga and breathing classes, to meditational excursions and inspirational talks. Leading experts from all over the world – including Yoga Girl London (Hannah Barrett) – came to share their work and experiences with guests.

And then there were the chakra healing beds, stand-up paddleboarding, and shiatsu massage chairs. I personally tried as many activities as I could given the timescale; some worked well, others not so much, but what I did appreciate was the variety on offer. The setting was ideal: while gentle ‘ommmms’ carried on the warm breeze, palm trees rustled against the lulling nocturne of waves, and birds chimed in with song.

Cynics may argue that Mauritius is a rather extravagant destination for a spot of meditation and mindfulness, but the setting certainly beats a stuffy, overcrowded and overpriced studio in London. There’s something special – and invigorating – about getting away from your daily routine. Here’s what I learned from the experience, and a few tips you might like to try too; whether at home, or on a far-flung island resort of your own.
