Heavy rainfall from late July caused severe flooding across several regions of Mauritania. Recent assessments reveal over 3,000 homes were destroyed and many others damaged. At least 14 fatalities were reported.
Heavy rain and flooding began around 25 July 2022 and continued into early August. According to a recent report by The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the worst affected areas include N’beika, Siyassah and Ashram in Tagant region, Guerou and Boumdid in the Assaba region, and the municipality of Agjart and Sava in the Hodh El Gharbi region.
Flooding caused extensive material damage, destroying 3,817 houses. In total 4,351 households, or 28,926 people, were affected. IFRC also reported the deaths of 14 people, most of them children.
The rains and flooding also impacted livelihoods, destroying crops and killing hundreds of livestock. Food stocks were also damaged. Parts of the road network were paralyzed for several days. Telecommunication and electricity services were also interrupted. Access to drinking water has become difficult for many families in affected areas.
Further heavy rainfall has fallen in recent days, in particular from 17 to 18 August where several areas reported more than 100 mm in 24 hours.
