Russia backs warlord to tighten grip on Africa

Russia’s navy has shipped thousands of tonnes of weaponry to Libya, using ties with a local warlord to create a bridgehead through which it can bolster its military presence in Africa.

The vessel, escorted by a navy frigate, entered the port of Tobruk in eastern Libya on April 8 after sailing from Moscow’s naval base in Tartus, Syria, and unloaded up to 6,000 tonnes of equipment.

In recent years Russia has supplied Wagner mercenary fighters backing the eastern Libyan warlord Khalifa Haftar, but the volume of the new shipment coincides with the insertion of regular Russian troops into Africa after the demise of Wagner.
