In 2023, Comoros will lead the African Union, AU, for the first time, marking the first time the island nation has been given this responsibility. After Kenya withdrew its candidacy, Comoros was given the duty.
Both President Azali Assoumani of Senegal and President William Ruto of Kenya had been vying for the position. Kenya withdrew, however, after a discussion outside of the US-Africa summit.
The Comorian president thanked Kenya in a statement on Thursday, saying that its action demonstrated Nairobi’s “commitment to supporting unity and stability in the East African area.” Currently presiding over the African Union is President Macky Sall of Senegal.
The holder of the preside over the assembly’s twice-yearly summit meetings and represents the continent in numerous international forums.
The position of this position is distinct from that of Moussa Faki Mahamat, a Chadian diplomat who currently serves as the chairperson of the AU commission.
The AU is a continental union consisting of 55 member states located on the continent of Africa. The AU was announced in the Sirte Declaration in Sirte, Libya, on September 9, 1999, calling for the establishment of the African Union.

The AU’s secretariat, the African Union Commission, is based in Addis Ababa. The largest city in the AU is Lagos, Nigeria, while the largest urban agglomeration is Cairo, Egypt. The African Union has more than 1.3 billion people and includes popular world landmarks, such as the Sahara and the Nile.
The primary working languages are Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Swahili.Within the African Union, there are official bodies, such as the Peace and Security Council and the Pan-African Parliament.
