The Committee to Protect Jounalists has urged authorities in Burkina Faso to “do everything possible” to find three journalists who went missing last month under suspicious circumstances. Press freedom is reported to have deteriorated in the country since the military government took power in a coup in 2022, “including suspensions of media outlets, expulsions of foreign correspondents, and efforts to conscript critical journalists,” CPJ said in a statement.
“The climate of fear in which journalists live in Burkina Faso undermines the public’s ability to be informed and understand how they are being governed at a time of rising insecurity across the country,” the group’s head of Africa program, Angela Quintal, said.
